TRW Spearheads Historic Stedman House Renovation and Adaptive Reuse for Albany County

Oct 9, 2025

Updating and Preserving the Court System Infrastructure

We are pleased to share our involvement in the multi-phased renovation of the historic Stedman House in Albany, New York, for Albany County. This critical project will restore the 1858 five-story row house and strategically adapt it to support the modern operational functions of the adjacent Albany County Justice Center.

The Stedman House, which encompasses approximately 6,500 square feet, holds a unique connection to the County Justice Center: it was retained and its first and second floors were integrated with the court building when the Justice Center was constructed in 2005. The current effort, which commenced in September 2024 and is ongoing, is utilizing a phased approach.

A Meticulous Phased Restoration

The initial work, Phase One, focuses on a meticulous exterior restoration of the street-facing façades on Columbia and Lodge streets. This comprehensive restoration includes:

  • Extensive repairs to the stone and brick masonry façades.

  • Restoration of historic wood windows and the wood entry door/vestibule.

  • Recreation of the masonry main entry stairs and restoration of wrought-iron metal window grilles.

  • Complete hazardous material abatement at the exterior.

Phase two consists of a complete interior renovation and restoration of the upper floors, including the integration of a new elevator to improve accessibility throughout the structure.

Strategic Adaptive Reuse for Court Functions

Beyond the physical restoration, a key component of TRW's work is collaborating with Albany County to develop a long-term strategy for the building's future use. The plan is to redevelop the property to house essential court support functions, including the County District Attorney's office.

The Stedman House project aligns with TRW’s core mission of reinvigorating and preserving existing and historic structures. It represents an exciting opportunity to blend preservation expertise with the challenges of creating a modern, secure, and highly functional facility for the Albany County Justice system.
