Mark Thaler and Steve Reilly performed a comprehensive roofing survey and reports on 28 buildings for Cornell University, including several of the most historically significant structures on the campus. Subject buildings included Sibley Hall, Morrill Hall, and Goldwin Smith Hall on the historic Arts Quad, as well as Toboggan Lodge, Alumni Relations and Fuertes Observatory.
The reports documented conditions found through close inspection provided by personnel lifts as well as review of historic drawings, photographs, and other archival documentation. The information gathered provided the basis for identification and prioritization of repairs or replacement, supplemented with detailed cost estimates for each building. The first of the buildings to be re-roofed was completed in 2012.
Surveys were followed by design and construction phase consulting for roofing replacement/envelope repair projects at Clark and Willard Straight Halls, and at the Undergraduate Admissions Building. Clark required a complete replacement in a very tight timeframe of a ballasted/inverted roofing system; Willard Straight Hall involved EPDM and sheet metal roofing replacement; and the Undergraduate Admissions Building required complete replacement of EPDM, asphalt single, and sheet metal roofing.
